Address by Prime Minister Netanyahu Likud Campaign HQ, Tel
Aviv
Associated Press/CNN (Excerpts) 18 May 1999
"Thank you my friends. I want to congratulate Ehud Barak on his
victory in the elections.
"This is how it has to be in a democracy. I want to thank all those
who supported and worked so hard, with such dedication for our way,
to bring peace and security to Israel, peace for generations and not
for the passing moment.
"Together with you, I am proud of what we have all done together in
the last three years. We've almost put a total stop to terrorism.
We've enabled Israel citizens to have personal security. We've
determined the principle of reciprocity. We have made progress
cautiously with peace. We have reduced inflation. We've carried out
privatization. We've brought record foreign investments to Israel, and
I'm sure that these are all lasting foundations on the basis of which it
will be possible to build a radiant future for the state of Israel. And I
do trust that we will all have a better future built on this, a better
future for us all.
"And now the tempest of the elections is passing, and we have to
quiet down. We have to also unify, and I think that the time has now
come to say something further. It is practically 20 years now that I
have been working for the benefit of the public, from the time that I
was Israeli ambassador in Washington and Israeli ambassador in
New York, and I have a great deal still that I can contribute to our
state.
"I have a great deal still to contribute to our state, but I believe that
the time has now come to take time out. I believe that the time has
now come -- I repeat," says Mr. Netanyahu, "I still have a great deal
to contribute to the state of Israel, but I think that the time has now
come to take time out to be with my family, with my wife and my little
children, and to decide as to where my path will lead me, and,
therefore, today I announce -- and, therefore, today I announce my
intention to resign from the Likud leadership.
"Ladies and gentlemen -- Ladies and gentlemen, I wish, once again,
to thank all those who have helped me so much and supported me so
greatly. I wish to thank you, every single one of you, for your
friendship, for your confidence, and for your fellowship. And I want to
tell you -- I want to tell you -- thank you. Thank you, ladies and
gentlemen.
"I want to thank two people in particular, Foreign Minister Ariel
Sharon, who never hesitated to stand beside me even at the difficult
moments. I want to thank my wife, Sara, who has encouraged me
and given me strength, and many of you, also, who have given me
endless support and understanding to achieve the goal which is
shared by all of us, to bring about a better future for our children and
ourselves in the State of Israel.
"I am sure that with God's help, with the help of yourselves, with the
help of a spirit of unity in Israel, we will see a better future for our
people and for our state. And, again, I want to thank you from the
bottom of my heart, my friends. Thank you. Thank you for your
support, for your help, for your confidence. We'll continue along our
way.
"Thank you. I love you, but I have said what I have to say. Thank you
again."
