An American in Saudi Arabia
Michael J. Hurd Ph.D. 28 Aug 2002
Amjad Radwan is being held in Saudi Arabia against her will. Because she is a woman, the Saudi government - a supposed "ally" of the United States - won't let her go without the written permission of a father or husband.
Where is the outrage from the American left? The left despises sexism and religious fundamentalism. But the left is also dedicated to the viewpoint of "multiculturalism." Multiculturalism means that you can't judge other cultures as wrong or irrational. What's right in the U.S. might not be right for the Saudis, the Iraqis or even al Queda (described by some on the left as "freedom fighters.")
Where is the outrage on the American right? The right historically opposed forms of totalitarianism such as Communism. However, in recent decades the American right has allied itself with religious zealots such as the Christian Coalition. Mere days after Moslem attacks on Washington and New York, President Bush felt compelled to defend Islam as a "religion of peace."
Just as the left is caught up in political correctness, the right is ensnared in religious correctness. We need an altogether new movement: in defense of the individual. Nothing less will save us.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Hurd Ph.D.
