Arab American Student Association at University of Houston
Bonnie Altman 19 Dec 2002
In early November, I pointed out to the University Office of Student
Activities that the Arab American Student Association at the University
of Houston featured an abridged Middle East Map on the homepage of
their
website. The map delineated all of Israel as "Palestine."
I complained that it was not right for this student organization, as
representative of the University of Houston, to advertise a map that
even the government of the US does not recognize.
I further argued that the same students would be offended if I were to
start a Jewish student group and alter a similar map to show an Israel
that comprised all the land area between the Nile and the Euphrates,
though on basis of our religious history I certainly have grounds to do
so.
I stated that despite my personal political beliefs, I would have no
business altering a map as such, as student groups do represent the
University, and as a state institution, the University represents the
State of TX, which represents the US, etc.
Since my complaint in early November, the map has been taken down and
the web site is being REVISED. I am one person. I pointed out a legal
issue, and the administration acted on it immediately. I didn't need
to
stage a protest or write an editorial. I simply used common sense and
the University's policies.
The University of Houston's Arab American Student Association web site
may now NOT be found at http://www.aasa96.org/.
