Arafat Warns: Our Rifles Are Ready
Excerpt from Agence France Presse (AFP) report from
Ramallah on November 15, 1998:
"Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat warned Sunday that Palestinians'
'rifles are ready' to defend their claim on Jerusalem as the capital
of a future independent state.
"Our rifles are ready and we are ready to raise them again if
anyone tries to prevent us from praying in holy Jerusalem," Arafat
said in a fiery speech to militants of his Fatah movement in
Ramallah."
Response by David Bar-Illan, Director of
Communications in the Prime Minister's Office, to
Chairman Arafat's statement:
"By stating that he would use rifles against Israel, Yasser Arafat is
declaring war on the peace process. The Prime Minister views such
statements with the utmost severity. He will bring the matter to
the special Cabinet meeting scheduled to convene on Thursday for
the purpose of approving the first phase of the further
redeployment."
