An astonishing coincidence?
Shlomo Weinreich 13 April 2002
Dear Mr. Netanyahu,
I has always watched your
appearances on American television with much admiration to the talent
you
represent delivering the Israeli cause. As I appreciate your efforts to
act
as the Voice of Israel in the US, I decided to share with you a very
recent
experience I had in this same arena.
On April 4 I watched on TV President Bush's address at the White House
lawn
where he announced on launching Secretary Powell's mission to the
middle
east.
One of the President's comments caught my attention when he described
the
tragedy in the middle east using the Palestinian young girl who,
according
to him, committed suicide out of desperation taking with her a young
innocent Israeli girl (the Jerusalem supermarket bombing).
I decided to send an email to President Bush making an argument why
such
acts should not be considered desperate acts of suicide but rather a
"homicide" bombing (my letter to the President is attached and I have a
confirmation email from the White House staff receiving it).
Yesterday (Friday) afternoon after the bombing near Mahane Yehuda in
Jerusalem, I was watching on CNN a live broadcast of the daily press
conference from the White House and to my surprise Harry Fleisher
called the
action for the first time "Homicide Bombing" I was even more surprised
when
a journalist asked Mr. Fleisher why did he change the term from
"Suicide" to
"Homicide" bombing and he answered him using very similar arguments I
used
in my (attached) mail to the President.
Isn't this amazing, could it be just a coincidence?
I feel glad and proud even if there is the slightest chance that my
comments
could make a difference and I can understand your satisfaction
(probably
along with many frustrations) given the opportunity to do it more
often.
I'll be glad and willing to do more in the future if asked.
Sincerely yours,
Shlomo Weinreich
