Betrayal of the Zionist Ideal

Bob Westbrook 16 May 2002

They never learn, do they? The Labor Party in Israel is playing the same lifeless tune once again, long after it has been proven to be discordant, and discredited. Though the violin of Oslo has been smashed beyond repair, they piece it back together, squeaking out a jarring, grating song on the wrecked instrument. Yet, inexplicable as it is, the audience vigorously applauds again as if being treated to a masterpiece.

The deep betrayal of the Zionist ideal that the Labor Party is once again pushing forward is unconscionable. Giving up the Temple Mount in exchange for Arafat's word -- has a more uneven bargain ever been conceptualized? Yet even if Judea, Samaria, Jerusalem, and the Temple Mount were to be exchanged for a mountain of gold, (or, to use a more fitting analogy, an ocean of oil), it would be a poor trade. And not only a poor one, but a treasonous one.

It is treasonous, because it is a slap in the face of the founder of Zion, the One who guaranteed Israel's return to and possession of the Land. What, after all, is Zionism, without Zion? And what is Israel without Zionism? The Labor Party supposes that there is an affirmative answer to this question, yet their extended pursuit of that bankrupt ideology is leading nowhere except to their own decline.

Fortunately, the events of the last twenty months have exposed the farce of Oslo, so that even the most optimistic proponents of "land for peace" have been shaken back to reality. For in that equation - land for peace - neither component was acceptable or based on reality. The "land" to be traded was not just any land, but God's Holy Land promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is only a fool that tries to override an oath uttered by the mouth of the Almighty. And the "peace" side of the equation, well, the evidence has proven that concept a sham from day one. Arafat has proven this to us repeatedly, with his words and actions.

Yet it is not only Arafat who is to blame. The tragedy of bad leadership in Israel has exacerbated the situation and left the nation vulnerable as it is today. This tragedy need not continue. Leadership of the kind Joshua provided is needed: strong, courageous action that will lead Israel "to take possession of the land I swore to their forefathers to give them." (Joshua 1:6)

The era of post-Zionism is past, meaning Israel is in a post-post-Zionism period now. Or better yet, why not call this the beginning of the era of Biblical Zionism? For it is the visions of the prophets that most clearly define the path that Israel must follow.

One of the most easily perceived lessons of Israel's storied history as described in the Bible is this: when the leaders led the people away from God's principles, difficulties inevitably followed. When they returned, He demonstrated great compassion for healing and restoration. Healing and restoration are what Israel needs today, not the sickly, worthless, spent ideas of godless men. Biblical Zionism is alive and well, and is indeed Israel's only path for peace.
