According to recent data received from the Central Bureau of
Statistics, the number of Israeli homes with personal computers is
among the highest in the world. Nevertheless, a wide gap still
exists between the advantaged and disadvantaged sectors in Israel.
Operating on the assumption that the acquisition of computer skills
is practically a prerequisite for success, and that it is of paramount
importance to acquire these skills at an early age, the "Social
Development Project" Association has set for itself the goal of
closing existing gaps and enabling tens of thousands of
socio-economically disadvantaged children to enjoy equal
opportunity, through the distribution of personal computers to
their homes.
The "Computer for Every Child" project is under the auspices of
the Prime Minister who has appointed a public council headed by
the Director General of the Prime Minister's Office. Council
members include Directors General of government offices;
representatives of local councils, the National Lottery, the Legacies
Fund, and Joint Israel; and members of the business community.
Today, the project extends to dozens of localities throughout
Israel. Last year alone some 3,300 computers where distributed.
The project includes a two-stage program of instruction in the use
of computers. To date, 2,138 children in 18 localities have
undergone the first stage which consists of 16 hours of instruction
- for a total of 34,208 hours. In the second stage, 34 hours of
instruction have already been received by 738 children in 7
localities, for a total of 25,092 hours of instruction.
