David & Goliath
Mrs. Dawn Unger 30 Mars 2002
Shabbat Shalom, Mr. Netanyahu:
I have just finished reading your commentary in today's Jerusalem Post, and wholeheartedly agree with your position. As part of the prayer circles in Washington, D.C. who arranged receptions and the prayer breakfast for you during your tenure as Prime Minister, hopefully you will recognize a shortcut version of my opinions regarding your leadership and the present position of the Israeli government.
While reading your comments regarding Arafat, I was put in mind that after he is expelled from Israel, so should Peres be deported for high treason; however, in a democracy citizens certainly must protect each other's right to disagree. At any rate, I realized that there is another burdensome player in the drama of Israel, and until this Goliath is slain, FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING, OF COURSE, there is little hope of any relief or support for Israel. The United Nations is the mouthpiece for Arafat and the Arabs, and every time Israel defends itself with far more restraint that we Americans have exercised in our own "war" on terror, the Secretary General, and/or the committees of the U.N. raise their voice to decry Israeli outrages against the poor Palestinians.
As I review my Bible, it was Goliath's MOUTH that kept the army of Saul terrorized behind the hills outside of Azekah. He hadn't done anything except run his mouth whenever the army of Israel set up for battle with the Philistines. (Samuel 17:8-11). Likewise, Israel is so intimidated by the lies being told by the U.N. and the media on behalf of Arafat that they fear losing international standing, and so exercise inconceivable, fear-filled restraint under attack.
When I consider the armor of Goliath, his brass helmet, coat of mail, and iron-headed spear, I recall the prophet Isaiah when he tells forth God's promise to Israel:
"For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make they officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness. Violence shall no more be heard in they land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shall call thy walls Salvation and thy gates Praise."
The prayer of my heart and of the ministry of my husband and myself is that Israel will no longer be afraid of the words of men, and that she will begin to move as one nation, united in the struggle for survival, and abiding in the shadow of the Almighty. We pray that God will raise up a David, who, by the anointing of the Lord, can speak truth and SUDDENLY, but irrevocably, cut off the mouthpiece--the lies of the U.N.
May God richly bless you, keep you and your family safe, and guide the decisions of Israel's leaders in these days of trial--
Shalom.
