From an American Friend
Shoshie 15 October 2002
The following is a note I sent in response to a "quote" a dear friend sent
me. I've removed his name to protect his identity.
Please note that my friend is a typical, un-informed American. He is someone
who practices Yoga, vegetarianism, and "eclectic spirituality". Someone who
is very much like me how I used to be, prior to facing the reality of
terrorism first hand (by being in Israel for a significant period of time).

"Why of course the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders
of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to
drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship,
or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ... Voice or no voice, the
people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy.
All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the
pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."
--Hermann Goering, Nazi leader, at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II
Dear -----------,
You know prior to living in Israel, or even going to Israel the first time, I
would have agreed with the message you provided above.
But seeing terrorism with my own eyes has really changed things. I have
spoken to "Palestinians" who are under the control of Arafat. This and my
Israel experience, has really opened my eyes. I have to tell you I wish I
could turn back the clock and not see the reality of the current world
crisis. I miss the days when I was naive, and would think nothing about
going to Peace protest marches. I did that prior to the start of the Gulf
War. I had no idea about what the situation really was. I only knew what the
news media threw at me.
There's an evil happening here. Something that goes far beyond normal
understanding of spirituality. Seeing things first hand created my newly
found prejudice against Muslim extremists. I hate it, being afraid of a
group of people who are different then me. But the thing is that my
prejudice is based on reality.
If we don't do surgery on this oozing wound now, more innocent people will
die. I would hate for those people to be any of my friends or family here in
the USA. People like, you, your wife and son. I know this first hand. I
have witnessed this with my friends and family in Israel.
Let me put this to you another way. How does it make sense that a mother
would tie bombs to her children, put them on a bus, just to blow up Jews?
If a mother would do that here in the "safety of the United States we would
be outraged. In our minds we would want to believe that the mother was
experiencing some form of mentally illness, think she must have just given
birth and has postpartum depression, or even hoping for a severe case of PMS.
Unfortunately mother's in the middle east (extremist Muslim) mothers do this
in the name of "G-d." This mother truly believes she is doing a good thing,
the right thing. The problem is an extremely deep seeded hate, that you and
I can't comprehend.
How do you reverse this type of hate? I'm talking about the type of hate that
has turned into terrorism? Remember we don't want another innocent person
being murdered? This is not unlike tracking down a "serial sniper" or even a
group of "serial snippers," only in this case they are a group of "serial
bombers." In the USA, a swat team from the police or military might end up
taking the serial snipper "out."
Thinking on those terms we need a large number of swat team members, and
unfortunately this means war.
I can't believe I'm saying that. I can't even kill bugs in my home. I have
to catch them and free them outside. But those bugs, haven't done anything
to harm me. They just didn't know any better. They didn't kill innocent
people.
Fundamentalist/extremist Muslims, have chosen terror, do know better. They
refuse to listen to reason. They are a danger to themselves, their children
and others. There's no massive sedative/or anti psychotic medication you can
give to these people, while they undergo intensive psychotherapy and/or
deprogramming. We don't have the time right now. Too many people are being
murdered. I wish there was a better solution, but there isn't.
If you or any of your friends question what I'm saying, then you need to
spend time in Israel. I wish I could send you on a vacation for two or three
weeks, so that you can spend some quality time in Jerusalem and perhaps
Hebron. I would have you walk around both cities. Let you dress and look
like a Jew. After you have that experience then we can have a conversation
about promoting peaceful solutions.
Take care,
Shoshie
