| Futility David K 21 Jul 2002 If Arafat and the entire PA leadership aren't exiled to Gaza Palestinian elections are just an exercise in legitimating that which has shown itself to be ineffective and illegitimate. For Israel an election which allows the Palestinians to claim that Israel is not the only democracy in the region and casts the legitimacy of democracy and a leadership which is cronically autocratic is not a good thing. In order for a Palestinian election to be in the interest of peace the Palestinian people must have a choice which only includes those who have a ginuine interest in peace. No one in the PLO/PA seems to fit this description. Mr. Netanyahu should expose the lunacy of this proposed Palestinian election excercise. Having a Palestinian election without exiling Arafat and the PA is like performing heart bypass surgery on a dead man. |
