Grave concern...
Audrey L. Althaus 07 June 2002
Dear Mr. Netanyahu:
I'm an American who is gravely concerned for the Nation of Israel, as I know all of you are. For many months, I've been following the information as it is reported on cable news networks here, as well as in the Jerusalem Post.
Two nights ago, late in the evening here, I caught a tickertape report (these run on cable TV at the bottom of picture on our news stations), which may have been from Reuters, that Mubarek of Egypt was prepared to suggest to President Bush that "a state be set up, theoretically, for the Palestinians in 2003 without setting borders. Just in case this wasn't known, I immediately sent an email to the Prime Minister's office at rohm@pmo.gov.il. Mubarek is scheduled to meet with Mubarek this weekend, before meeting with Mr. Sharon on Monday.
I haven't a lot of confidence that emails from the public are actually read, but I felt I needed to take the chance. I should add that, with the same lack of confidence, I keep sending emails to Congress and the Whitehouse stating my strong concerns on Israel's behalf.
The news today confirms the above schedule, saying that the President feels confident that such a proposition, combined with a "deal" that Palestinians give up on the "right of return" of the refugees, in exchange for Israel's giving up the settlements.
Contrary to the long history of strong U.S. support and backing which our country has always shown beyond question for Israel, I have no confidence nor trust in our current president. I hope that your connections in Congress may have indicated the same, even from some of those in his own party.
By what right or international law/understanding does the U.S., or any other country, seek to impose its will that a second state be set up within the boundaries of another democratic nation? It seems to be Bush's concept that if he keeps on repeating the same idea long enough for public consumption, that citizens of the U.S. will eventually come to accept it. I believe that, at this point in time after 9/11, our citizens are so confused and upset, by all the warnings and speeeches from Bush and his cadre, that they may actually come to accept this action as lawful and "normal."
I'm terribly concerned, as well as frustrated, that I or any of us can do so little to help, or to inform the State of Israel that we here are still truly your strong allies and friends.
I'm very puzzled at the path Mr. Sharon is taking. For the third time, I awoke yesterday to dismay and disappointment after hanging on the news til after midnight the night before, in anticipation that Mr. Sharon would either exile or "take out" Arafat. I've always thought of him as the consumate soldier; one who would not long suffer such a fool...let alone take repeated attacks from the terrorists. The only conclusion I can reach--and it isn't a happy one--is that Mr. Sharon is being coerced by Bush and/or Powell. I wouldn't have believed it of him. Has Bush threatened to turn off financial support of Israel? Please be sure to inform us, the U.S. citizens as well as members of Congress, if this is being done, so that we can get the word out.
Now is the time to act, while the eyes of the world are turned to India and Pakistan. I doubt that anyone is impressed by blowing up a few (or many) buildings in "retaliation" for the Israeli lives lost. Also, I have to wonder what good it will do to build fences. The Palestinians have had more than enough chances to prove their intentions as partners for peace! I hope and pray daily that Israel will take back control of ALL the land that was given to you in God's Covenant, including the West Bank and Gaza.
Sincerely,
Audrey L. Althaus
