Happy Independence Day, Israel
Patrick Pearlman 17 April 2002
Fifty-four years ago the world witnessed one of the most improbable
events of history: The rebirth of the Jewish State after a 2,000 year
absence. And as if that event were not significant enough, the world
was
soon to bear witness to an even more improbable event -- the successful
defense of the new state by a mere 600,000 Jews against the invading
armies of six Arab states.
Since 1948, Israel has defended itself against the hostility of its
neighbors and the enmity of many who wished the State would disappear.
And not only did Israel survive -- it thrived. Today, Israel has a
standard of living and economy comparable with those of the
industrialized and democratic West. The swamps and wasteland that
confronted early Zionist settlers have been transformed into rich farms
and bustling towns. All this was accomplished despite continual attacks
from Israel's Arab neighbors and their terrorist proxies.
Truly, G-d's blessings upon the congregation of Israel have been made
manifest again and again during these fifty-four years. Only two
generations of Jews have known the existence of Israel in the past
2,000
years -- let us remember that and give thanks for being blessed to live
at this time.Though the days ahead are fraught with peril and pain, let
all the people of Zion rejoice that we again have a state, that we
again
possess Jerusalem, and that the Jewish people have been reborn in their
eternal homeland. And let us resolve to never lose our inheritance
again.
