Hatikvah

Ian Service 6 Nov 2002

Dear Sirs:

I am a Canadian Christian (not a Jew). I am currently studying modern introductory Hebrew at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.

We were introduced to Hatikvah, the Israeli national anthem, in our Hebrew primer. I obtained a literal English translation. I am moved, both by the music and the words. I have composed a lyrical English translation of the Hebrew that fits the music. It is a free translation, with some poetic license, but incorporates all the main themes in Hatikvah. I don't know if there is any value in an English version, or if one already exists, but here it is, for your consideration:

HATIKVAH (THE HOPE)

While the Jewish spirit yearns
Deep in her people's heart and soul,
While to the East she longing turns
And looks to Eretz Zion, her goal,

Then our hope, that has withstood
Two millennia, yet shall stand,
To live in freedom and brotherhood,
In Zion and Jerusalem, our land.

Sincerely, Ian Service One who holds the Jewish nation as God's chosen earthly people in high regard.
