An insensed American.
Steve Watkins 19 Apr 2002
Dear Mr. Netanyahu,
I hope this e-mail reaches you because I want you to be encouraged. I
am a
non-Jewish American and I served as a US Navy SEAL for six years (SEAL
Team
5 - 87-93). I was in the platoon that carried out the widely publicized
"diversion of Iraqi troops" in the Gulf War under the command of Lt.
Tom
Deitz. I was accepted to SEAL Team Six (now Devgroup) but did not renew
my
enlistment in order to pursue college and graduate school.
I also love Israel. I have a love and passion for the Jewish people and
the
Israeli state that I really can't explain. I think it is as strong,
maybe
stronger, than my love for America.
I am at the point of pulling my hair out with the insulting and
degrading
way in which our President and his administration have been treating
Israel.
I support Bush, voted for him, and think him to be a decent and morally
upright man.
It makes me madder than anything Clinton ever did, because I expected
him to
speak out of both sides of his mouth-but Bush's hypocrisy is just
dumbfounding. Fighting terrorists in Afghanistan in the name of freedom
(and
rightly so) and then pressuring Israel to stand and "do as we say, not
as we
do" is absolutely the height of hypocrisy. I am ashamed at our nation,
which
I have risked my life to defend.
I know a little of why pressure is so great on the US to be "cool" in
all of
this. But I fear that, as you have articulated so eloquently, we are in
for
an insane and treacherous future if we don't act now and with an
unflinching
resolve.
Is there anything I can do to express my discontentment to our
administration? If so what? Feel free to share my humble e-mail with
any
people of political influence.
My apologies to you and to the wonderful people of Israel-my favorite
vacation spot in all of the world.
Shalom
Steve Watkins
