IS POWELL A PACIFIST APPEASER OF TERRORISTS?
Emanuel A. Winston, Mid East Analyst & Commentator
8 March 2002
General Colin L. Powell, Secretary of State and the U.S. State Department are clearly impediments to America’s Global War against Terror. No wonder there is a significant split between them and the Bush team of VP Dick Cheney, Sec. of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, asst. Def. Sec. Paul Wolfowitz. President Bush correctly believes terrorists are terrorists regardless of their political positions.
But, the U.S. State Department often casts terrorists as freedom fighters [see Martin Fletcher’s MSNBC interview of March 7th which declares the terrorists "are fighting for a cause - for their rights." This is a direct line from the U.S. State Department.]
The U.S. State Department seemingly goes along with the Bush agenda of a Global War Against Terrorism but, at the same time, uses their organizations and connections to the Media to advance their diplomatic appeasement. Part of this effort is conducted through a usually liberal media who equates terrorism and fighting terrorism as the same thing.
As an example, March 7th FOX NEWS’ Geraldo Rivera led the coverage of today’s suicide bombing in the Israeli city of Ariel with sympathy for the Palestinians. Here again the idea of moral equivalence was being pushed as Powell, the pacifist’s ideology. There is a tendency/policy to lead each report with what happened to the Palestinians and tail off the report with a comment that Israel’s attack was in response to a Palestinian terrorist attack killing or seriously wounding Israeli Jews - too often including children from infants to teenagers.
Same day, March 7th Martin Fletcher was given the ‘privilege’ of an exclusive interview with about 5 masked terrorists, including a woman terrorist (he was very proud of that ‘exclusivity’, ‘first interview with terrorists’, ‘first interview with a woman terrorist’). Fletcher, again following the line of the liberal Media which seems to follow State Department ‘spin’ policy, positioned the suicide bombers as, somehow, philosophically correct because their opponents are Israeli Jews. [And, Yes, we recognize and believe that this is a definite racial, anti-Zionist, religious and anti-Semitic bias by the U.S. State Department which feeds the liberal Media against Israel.]
It seems amply clear that the State Department has once again been released as a political attack dog against Israel’s response to the PLO’s daily terror attacks. It’s nice to be a Super Power and to be able to make up one set of defensive rules for yourself and another for other nations. Israel is a small nation, being insanely attacked daily by Arab terrorists with a promise to never cease their attacks until the Jews are gone and Islam is dominant. .
Compare that with China, Russia and America who are similarly being attacked by terrorists but are free to counterattack with no objections by the Bush or rather the Powell State Department. We hear speech after speech by President Bush saying: "A terrorist is a terrorist - and those who harbor terrorists are also terrorists." The pretense that Arafat is not a terrorist and that his entire thrust is not linked to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda, is an insult to every thinking American.
But, ‘those terrorists who attack Israel, are not culpable of terrorism’ : so says Secretary of State Colin Powell. The PLO get speeches and conferences, Generals and Vice Presidents who pay cordial visits. The Media gives them kind, sympathetic interviews. America is again bombing Afghanistan and is proud to have killed 100 various Taliban and al Qaeda but, if Israel acts to defend herself, she is in the wrong. The Media runs many anti-Israel features on television, radio and print media in lock-step with the Arabists at State.
Is there something wrong with this picture?
General Colin L. Powell, now Secretary of State and the U.S. State Department are clearly an impediment to America’s war on terror. It’s no wonder that there is a significant split between the Bush team of Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz who believe that terrorists are terrorists. Even as Colin Powell is preaching restraint to Israel, accommodating the same Arab nations who have contributed terrorists, money and sanctuary to the same Muslims we are fighting in Afghanistan. Powell still censors Israel for defending her citizens.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Syria - all have supplied dedicated Islamic fighters - sending terror sleeper cells who mounted the four terrorist kidnapings of airplanes used as flying bombs into the World Trade Center, Pentagon and some unknown target prevented by passengers crashing in Pennsylvania. These dedicated Islamic fighters are also fighting and killing American soldiers.
We do, we listen, and we try to appease these nations as well as the Europeans who have done close to nothing in the Global fight against Terrorism. .
While we know that the U.S. State Department, itself a "Shadow Government" is shot through and through with Arabists and a source of unremitting bias by that organization, why must President Bush cave in to Arab pressure? Arabs and radical Muslims are engaged in attacks all over the globe. Why the pretense that Muslims, radical or not, have not ‘yet’ joined in a War against Jews and Christians globally?
This is a clash of civilizations and no amount of happy talk or voicing disapproval of Israel’s counter-terrorism measures can change the facts of Islamic terror. If we can follow President Bush’s words that there are no good terrorists, can we not allow Israel to deal with the terrorists who murder her people just as we Americans are dealing with our own terrorists?
Tell us, Mr. Powell, are you ready to sit down with Osama bin Laden to negotiate future reduced terrorism or are you gunning to kill him?
Are you ready to accept suicide bombers or any attacks on Americans as an acceptable level if they claim they have a reason (a cause or a right) to kill us?
Shall we have an M.O. (Memorandum of Understanding) with al Qaeda forces or Iraq’s Saddam if they offer a temporary reprieve from terror or building weapons of mass destruction?
Mr. Powell, are you either a supreme pacifist or so consummately naive that you would be better off as a missionary in the Congo? That you find moral equivalency in a suicide attack by Palestinians and a counter-strike by Israel makes you unfit to hold any office where fair and clear-headed thinking is necessary.
If you were running for political office, your opponents’ slogan could be that you are a Pacifist, interfering with the just defense of the American people. Attacking Israel for conducting her war against terrorism defeats the entire Bush premise that terrorism must be eliminated globally.
It is clear that all terrorist organizations are physically and fiscally interlinked with a global network that threatens civilization. By excusing one prime terror organization, because attacking it would cause interruption of commerce, is a sure way to keep terror alive and well for the future.
Arafat’s PLO is an octopus with many different names, all dedicated to killing Jews and interconnected to all other world terror organizations. This time we - everyone in the whole world - are facing NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) weapons of mass destruction which can too easily fall into the hands of those terrorists we have allowed to go on living.
Then, shall we say, "Thank Secretary Colin Powell"?
