Israel sees "smoking guns" in U.S. evidence on Iraq

JERUSALEM, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Israel said on Wednesday U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell provided overwhelming evidence that Iraq was developing banned weapons and his U.N. speech pointed to many "smoking guns" that should convince sceptics.

"He laid bare the true nature of (Iraqi President) Saddam Hussein's regime and I think he exposed the great dangers that emanate from this regime to the region and to the world," right-wing Israeli Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters.

Israel has made clear it would back its chief ally, the United States, if it takes military action against Iraq over alleged weapons of mass destruction it says Saddam has conspired to conceal from U.N. weapons inspectors.

Asked whether Powell had provided a sound argument for military action in his speech to the U.N. Security Council, Netanyahu said: "I think the case was overwhelming for Saddam's disarmament, peacefully if Saddam so chooses or through military action if he doesn't."

Asked if there was a smoking gun in Powell's speech, he said: "One gun? I saw many.

"I think it's plainly evident...from the overwhelming amount of intelligence that is available...that Saddam is wilfully violating U.N. resolutions and trying to develop in stealth biological weapons, chemical weapons and nuclear weapons," Netanyahu said.

Most Israelis strongly support U.S. military action against Iraq despite their fears that Saddam would target the Jewish state with Scud missiles as he did during the 1991 Gulf war.
