Poll: Netanyahu would beat Barak
By Gil Hoffman

JERUSALEM (October 6) - The winner of the week's clashes between the security forces and Palestinians and Israeli Arabs is former prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, according to a poll conducted over the past two days by Bar-Ilan University's Institute for Community Research.

"Israel is certainly not the winner and [Prime Minister Ehud] Barak is the big loser," the institute's director, Dr. Ya'acov Katz, said yesterday. "People seem to long for Netanyahu's strong leadership, when compared to Barak. They want someone who is not a sucker and would stand firm. They want the reciprocity associated with Netanyahu."

The poll found that if elections were held today and the candidates were Barak and opposition leader Ariel Sharon, Barak would win handily, but if Netanyahu opposed him, he would win by a percentage greater than the margin of error.

A majority of the poll's respondents, 48 percent to 43%, said they would prefer early elections to a national unity government.

The poll is based on a representative sample of 519 people, including Arabs and haredim.

Overall public opinion about Israeli Arabs has changed due to the violence, according to the poll, which found that 67% of Israelis believe that Israeli Arabs are more loyal to the Palestinian Authority than they are to Israel. Less than a quarter of Israelis now believe that Arab citizens are more loyal to the state than the PA.

"The Israeli population has now finally come to the realization that there is a serious problem with loyalty of the Arabs," Katz said. "Until now, whenever there was an incident, fingers were pointed at the Israeli leadership and at extremists, but never at Arabs. Now, for the first time, Israelis are saying Arabs are more loyal to the Palestinians than Israel. It's a 180-degree turnaround in conventional wisdom."
