JUST ANOTHER SUICIDE BOMBING IN ISRAEL.
P. Pearlman, 20 Mar 2002
You've got to give Arafat credit.
Less than 24 hours after the IDF completes its pull-out from Judea and
Samaria, and while efforts to negotiate yet another American-imposed
cease fire are ongoing, another suicide bomber murders 6 Jews on a bus
and maims another 30. And Arafat's response to the attack? A flagrant
rejection of America's oft-repeated demands for a "100% effort" against
Palestinian terrorism and an implicit suggestion that the terror will
continue.
While Arafat "condemns" the bombing and calls on Palestinians to not
attack Jews "within Israel," he obviously suggests that they are free
to
attack Jews in the Territories and elsewhere. More appalling is the
fact that, despite the lip-service paid to condemning the attack, the
PA's security chiefs (Rajoub and Dahlan) praised the "Umm el-Fahm
operation," making it clear that the bombing is considered a "military"
operation. Of course, this follows closely on the heels of Rajoub's
praise of the Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades.
Here's yet another thumb in the eye of Sharon and the National Unity
government of appeasement. Not only has Arafat succeeded in winning
international condemnation of Israeli self-defense efforts during the
last few weeks, not only has he converted the US "War on Terrorism"
into
leverage for the declaration of a Palestinian state by Europe, the US
and the UN, but he's been able to accomplish these aims while publicly
flaunting his disdain for Israeli and American reaction.
Who would have ever thought that the man who rejected Barak's reckless
offers of land for peace, who let loose terrorists in the wake of that
rejection, and who was caught red-handed smuggling weapons into
Palestinian-administered territories, could be so adroit? And who
would
have ever believed the Israeli government's response could be so
feeble?
In the wake of this latest attack, the Sharon government is left
mumbling incoherently out of both sides of its mouth. First Sharon
suggests he might not allow Arafat to return from the Arab League
summit, then Ben-Eliezar states that the push for a cease-fire must be
"accelerated." Please! As if Sharon were really going to ban Arafat's
return. America and the international community would never allow such
action against the "chosen leader of the Palestinian people" (a direct
quote from none other than former Senator William Mitchell during a CNN
interview on March 20). And as if we didn't already know that Sharon's
government will race to the dotted line on yet another cease-fire
agreement that won't be worth the paper it's written on.
The truth is, this little farce is getting old. It's boring. We all
know its outcome, so why continue to drag it out?
Mr. Sharon, just sign any cease-fire agreement the Americans ask you to
sign. Better yet, sign several undated copies for use in the future,
after this cease-fire has been broken. Save Mr. Zinni and Mr. Cheney
the air fare. Even better, just sign whatever document Arafat gives
you
that he says represents all of his demands for peace (for now). You
know that's where you're headed. Get it over with.
And let the Israeli people get on with the serious business of picking
out some really nice cemetery plots.
