My letter to President Bush
Jacqueline Halm 16 Mars 2002
Dear President Bush:
This is a long letter. I am sorry. I hope someone in your staff will read it. I hope you can, too.
Thank you for seeking out terrorists around the world. Thank you for caring about America. We live in difficult and dangerous times, and the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks are but a small taste of what terrorists want to do to America.
We lost 3,000 brave and good people on that terrible day in September. My son is training to be a policeman. He will also begin work as a volunteer firefighter this summer. I see his heart and face on the faces of many who died on September 11th. Had he been in New York, Kevin would have been among the missing. That is the kind of kid he is.
But there is something, Mr. President, I do not understand.
Why do we sleep with the Devil to chase him down? This is a treacherous and costly gambit!
We are in a race with time, Mr. President, and people are still dying. September 11th happens again and again everyday in the tiny nation of Israel.
We seek Al-Qaeda. We seek Osama bin Laden. But we validate the Palestinian Authority--the PLO--and therefore, Hamas. We validate Yasser Arafat.
Mr. President, if we support the formation of an autonomous and sovereign Palestinian Arab nation, we are creating a terrorist state! How can we justify hunting down one terrorist while we elevate another to the position of a legitimate world leader?
I have videotape from Palestinian television showing Yasser Arafat calling for "Jihad! Jihad! Jihad!" against every Jewish man, woman and child--and against Americans. Is that not what Osama bin Laden has said?
I have videotape of Yasser Arafat smiling with pride and pleasure as Palestinian Arab children -- even little girls in lovely lace dresses -- dance before him with guns in their hands.
I have footage of kindergartners with imitation bombs strapped about their waists and chanting about martyrdom.
I have footage of children in elementary classrooms reciting poems about killing Jews and becoming martyrs.
I have footage of Palestinian Arabs painting swastikas on the Israeli flag and burning the American flag, as Yasser Arafat watches approvingly.
I have footage of a Palestinian Arab mob pulling an older, unarmed Jewish man from his car and beating him until his head and face are drenched in his blood.
I have a recent editorial from a Saudi government newspaper (Al-Riyadh) that explains how Jews sacrifice youngsters to harvest blood to place in their Purim cookies. This same vicious and dehumanizing lie is being taught in Palestinian Arab schools and mosques, and in Egypt, and in Lebanon, and in Syria, and in Pakistan, and in mosques throughout the Islamic world.
Mr. President, is this any different than Nazi Germany? Is Yasser Arafat not a Hitler-redeemer to the people he claims are his own? Is he not a Hitler to unarmed Jewish men, women and children who have become carnage in the streets of the cities of Israel?
Neville Chamberlain negotiated "peace" with Hitler. Shall America relive this hideous and grievous mistake?
Yasser Arafat and his Palestinian Authority policemen -- whom the Israelis armed in a goodwill "peace" gesture -- have terrorized both Jews in Israel and Christians in Palestinian Arab territories. They have terrorized those among their own people who have "corroborated" with Jews. It was Palestinian Authority police who did, in fact, oversee and participate in the unprovoked slaughter of two Israeli reservists in October of 2000, initiating this current intafada. I have footage of this event too, Mr. President. I have pictures of the men's faces after their lifeless bodies had been trampled, beaten and stoned by frenetic mobs as the Palestinian Authority stood by.
The simple American that I am, Mr. President, I see that we are in bondage to the Arab oil cartel. Pardon my language, but we are kissing butt to try to kick butt! And you know what it looks like to me? They have us right where they want us!
Who has us? Bin Laden and Arafat. The September 11th strikes were timed perfectly to meet the objectives of this current intafada. We are so busy kissing up to the Arab-Islamic governments in our hunt for Al-Qaeda, that we are forced to push for a Palestinian state. Because the European Union and the United Nations (both of whom are strikingly pro-Arafat--remember the meetings in South Africa last year?) support formation of a sovereign Palestinian state, and because we need them to support our anti-terrorist coalition, we are forced to push for a sovereign Palestine.
How, Mr. President, are we going to keep a sovereign Palestine from importing weapons from Iran? We certainly aren't offering Israel much support in its effort to do so now.
The United States is going to place one more terrorist state next to her only reliable ally in the Middle East, surrounding that ally with terrorist states, and still mangage to keep the North Koreans from attacking South Korea, keep the Chinese from annexing Taiwan, control the sale and purchase of nuclear and biological arsenal by such countries as North Korea, Russia, Iran, Iraq, many of the former Soviet states, China, and Syria?
What happens if the government in Egypt is toppled in a revolutionary coup? What about the government in Pakistan? How are we going to deal with an Al-Queda network in Pakistan, the Philippines, Kashmir, Chechnya, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt...and Palestine? Are we going to bomb all these places or try to instigate coups? Are we going to turn our backs on India as we are doing to Israel now? How can we be certain that the weapons and technology we have sold to a number of Arab "allies" will not be aimed at Israel when Arafat decides it is time to complete the plan articulated so clearly in both the Palestinian National Charter and the Hamas Covenant?
For this is a plan that calls for the complete annihilation of the Nation of Israel, and the removal, extermination or subjugation of every Jewish person on "Palestinian" soil. This is Islamic law, Mr. President. According to Islamic law, once land belongs to Allah it will always belong to Allah, and no Muslim living on that land can ever live under the authority of Jews or Christians ever again.
Here is the simple formula: medireval mentality + modern weapons of war = terrorism.
Which brings me to my most pressing concern, Mr. President.
When an Arab coalition oil-dependent America cannot control once again decides to point its arsenal at tiny Israel, when Arafat and his radical and moderate allies decide that it is time to defeat and abolish the nation of Israel, where is Israel's Jewish population of 5,000,000 people going to go?
This population includes Jewish Israelis who were born in Israel, as well as people who have risked all they had to escape persecution and poverty in places such as Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir, Iraq, Iran, Ethiopia, South Africa, Nazi Europe, and places and times beyond. Mr. President, the persecution of Jews in some parts of the world is so intolerable that even today people keep coming to Israel. Where are these people going to go? Will America take 5,000,000 refugees? Can America take 5,000,000 refugees? Can or will anybody? Or will Arafat finally fulfill his cousin Al-Husseini's promise to Hitler that the task Hitler had begun would be finished?
Mr. President, you say you are a Christian. I am a Christian, too. I am a Jewish Christian. That means that some people might consider me a paradox. That means that I have had to grapple with some difficult questions and answers. But I have lost more sleep over the events I see unfolding in the Middle East and in the entire world, than I have ever lost before.
I have read and heard the rhetoric proliferating in mosque after mosque, in newspaper after newspaper in the Muslim world. 5,000,000 more Daniel Pearls, even 10,000,000 more Daniel Pearls--this is what it calls for. The voices are more diffuse and farther ranging than anything Hitler could have imagined. The voices have world powers and world institutions to back them up. Some proactively support, others support through indifference, silence. Mr. President, remember Rwanda. Remember Pol Pot's killing fields. Look at what is happening in the Sudan today. If the international community is turning a blind eye here, will they not follow historical precedent in dealing with Jews?
This frightens me.
I guess the Chief Rabbinate was right. Israel can depend on God, their Heavenly Father, and Him alone. There just isn't anybody else.
And I cannot place my faith in a country foolish enough to sleep with the very Devil it is trying to defeat.
This saddens me profoundly.
Yours respectfully,
Jacqueline Halm
