Netanyahu in the Knesset: "We restrained ourselves long enough"

Netanyahu in the Knesset: "We restrained ourselves long enough"

December 29, 2008

In a special emergency session of the Knesset, opposition leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, expressed full support for the military action and called for unity behind the Army and citizens of the south.

The main exerts from his speech:

For three crimes of Gaza, and the fourth no response said Amos (prophet of the Hebrew Bible). On firing on our civilians, on hiding behind civilians, on causing pain and suffering on our civilian and their civilians, we will return upon the murderer's regime tenfold. On the call to annihilate us, on the dancing on the ruins of our villages, on the poisoning of minds and hearts, on the destroying of hopes, we will retaliate heavy handedly, the hand of Israel, as the prophet Amos said: "and I shall send fires onto the walls of Gaza" There isn't a nation in the world who would have acted differently. No people who would have restrained itself so long, too long.

For many years we have been saying that the cease fire is an illusion and that we need to go from passiveness to activeness, but now we should focus on the present and the future.

We wish to strengthen the hand of the residents of the south who stand under fire and now we face a double objective: stopping the firing on our cities and removal of the rocket threat. Achieving the first portion can be done in a short while, but the second objective will be achieved only by toppling Hamas's regime.

There is also another objective, and that is the restoring of Israel's deterrence without which we will not survive. Our enemies have seen for many years since our independence a strong Israel, and from one war to the other the numbers of our enemies decreased. This policy has opened the way to peace with Egypt and Jordan. In the recent years policy mistakes and weaknesses have caused the perception of our enemies to change. They think that Israel's power is diminishing, that our national force is tired and that our will to fight has relaxed.

Nothing is more important than changing this perception of our enemies. Nothing is more important than insuring that Israel has left for good the way of weakness and went back to way of strength.

Such a change will not happen with one military mission. It will not happen in a single week, month or even year. Deterrence can be lost in a short while, but it takes many years to be rebuilt. Our deterrence will be reinstated when we uphold a consecutive, through and unrelenting fight against terror, when we will make clear our red lines and when we'll make our enemies pay a heavy price for breaching our red lines.

We must make clear to Hamas that we will not tolerate rocket fire on our cities. We can eliminate the rocket threat. Whoever says otherwise said in the past that we cannot wipe out the suicide terrorism and the firing on Gilo (a neighborhood in Jerusalem that was fired on by Palestinian terrorist in 2000-2001).

We cannot return the years of lost tranquility to the kids of the south, but we can create a different reality by adopting a different policy.

In the reality that has evolved around us, further withdrawals will only allow our enemies to seize those territories and turn them into new bases for firing rocket on our cities, civilians and children. Therefore we must keep in our hand defendable borders which include: The Golan Heights, The Jordan Valley and our entire capital of Jerusalem.

Let our enemies not mistake themselves, our people are fully united in danger. We stand united in front of the war. To the Israeli Arabs I say: separate yourselves from the extremist within you, safeguard the relationship between us. And to the extremists I say: be careful! We will act strongly against Hamas supporters within us. For whoever has no loyalty to the state he lives in it will be difficult to demand participation in all of the rights of that state.

I call on the prime minister to fire minister Majdla immediately (minister Majdla is the 1st Arab to serve in the Israeli cabinet, Majdla has publicly boycotted the latest cabinet meeting in what seems to be protest to the government's actions). A minister of the government of Israel serves for the state and cannot boycott cabinet meetings while Israel is fighting with its enemies. We can expect days of challenges and testing. We will all stand behind our soldiers in the war's front, stand behind our residents in south, and behind the right cause of our country in explaining it to the world.

Only vigilant standing up to our enemies will return our deterrence. Only that will insure our security. And in the end this will bring us the peace.

"The Lord shall give strength to his people; the Lord shall bless his people with peace"
