Netanyahu on 'The Factor' and in Congress

Robert Gardner 22 April 2002

Israel, Prime Minister Netanyahu, fellow supporters of Israel,

I am very supportive of Israel's action against Arafat and his organization. I feel that former Prime Minister Netanyahu is the single best advocate for Israel's position with regard to the problems Israel faces. He is very articulate and tonight he won a debate with Bill O'Reilly (sp?). I agree with Mr. O'Reilly on quite a few subjects but on Israel he is wrong and Mr. Netanyahu is right. I believe most Americans agree with Mr. Netanyahu's stance.

I would like to share my thoughts on Israel's situation. First, I am a white, Anglo-Saxon protestant so that discounts the possibility that I have any axes to grind. Second, I have studied some on the situation in the Middle East but I have not studied enough. I am now reading 'A Durable Peace' by Mr. Netanyahu. I hope all Americans start reading more about the situation over there.

Here is my opinion of the situation in Israel and the surrounding area. Arafat and his organization have been playing a very cunning political card. He and his allies (this includes some other Arab countries) know that Americans tend to cheer for the underdog so Arafat (etal) has moved in and positioned himself as the 'underdog' in this conflict. In the process of doing this he has infiltrated and positioned up to two divisions of hostile militia (PLO 'security' forces) in the heart of Israel (namely, the West Bank). He has done this with the support, both militarily and economically, of many of the Arab countries. Sun Tzu would have given Arafat an award for cunning if this had happened in his day.

This can not be allowed to continue. The fact is that most Arab armies can not stand up to the Israeli army and I believe they are looking for a way to 'divide and conquer'. I think they believe they can do this by using the Palestinians as a wedge to weaken the ability of Israel to defend itself. I believe the Palestinians should have their own state but not in the West Bank and not at the expense of a secure Israel. Mr. Netanyahu speaks very concisely about this and I hope America listens.

I support Israel and the positions of Mr. Netanyahu. I sincerely hope many more American leaders (and Americans) make themselves aware of the history of the Middle East so they can make better decisions regarding support of Israel. Keep up the good work Mr. Netanyahu. You have many supporters out here!
