Not so smart, Erekat
Elan 25 July 2002
Commenting on Israel's execution of terrorist Salah Shehadeh NPR
(National Public Radio) quotes PA official SAEB EREKAT
"This is a war crime actually and nothing justifies that F-16 bombers
go
and hit residential areas, nothing under any circumstances. And we all
know that bullets will breed bullets, violence will breed violence,
hate
will bring hate. We don't need this. We had a meeting yesterday. We
were
meeting with the Israelis yesterday, urging them to give the peace
process a chance and now comes this."

By aiding and abetting Hamas terrorists, and by denying Israel's
repeated requests that Salah Shehadeh be prosecuted, the PA has made
itself responsible for the unfortunate Palestinian casualties that
resulted from Israel's successful effort to end Shehadeh's bloody
terrorist career. It is appalling that Mr. Erekat criticizes Israel for
casualties that could have been avoided, had the PA refrained from
inciting and supporting Palestinian terrorist attacks against innocent
Israeli civilians and instead ruled in terrorists, such as Salah
Shehadeh.
Israel's primary obligation is to ensure the safety of its citizens
before Israel makes any laudable, but not obligatory efforts to keep
Palestinian civilian casualties to a minimum as it pursues this primary
duty. Mr. Erekat is in effect demanding that Israel value the welfare
of
Palestinian civilians higher than that of its own citizens.
If Mr. Erekat says that "bullets will breed bullets, violence will
breed
violence, hate will bring hate", then he apparently understands the
reason for Israel's missile attack: It is precisely what the PA and its
terrorist organizations have been feverishly breeding for years.
Mr. Erekat knows very well that "now comes this" is the result of
Palestinian terrorism, such as the recent bus bombings. For Mr. Erekat
"to give the peace process a chance" is apparently synonymous with
allowing terrorists to pursue their bloody trade unpunished.
If Mr. Erekat were truly worried about peace, he would applaud Israel's
successful efforts to prepare the ground for a political solution, by
eliminating a key terrorist figure.
