NYC: A Jew's views
Martin Heilweil 12 Mars 2002
I appreciated your clear comments on Alan Keyes, and the emphasis on
the
security and historical significance of the disputed lands. This is
equivalent to saying these lands will never be returned; whether or not
this should be more exactly said than what you have said remains an
open
question. I also appreciated your observation that Mr Sharon will more
likely be replaced from the right than from the left. I also
appreciated
that the 1967 war commenced when the Arabs had control of all these
disputed lands, and so that is not the issue.
I write to suggest a further point - the 1967 borders are in fact the
1948-9 borders, achieved by military force, after the 1947 borders,
established by the UN, were ignored by the Arabs. In the same way that
the 1967 borders reflect a 1949 military adjustment, the 2002 borders
will need to reflect a military adjustment of the 1967 military
boundaries. Very simple.
The Arabs bleed and bleat about non-conformance to the 1967-related UN
resolutions which apparently mandated secure borders, ie adjustments,
ie
the settlements, but the Arabs have not abided by the 1947 resolution
(181?) that created Israel. If they want to pick and choose which UN
resolutions they like, so can we.
The Arabs went to war in 1967, and lost. Get over it. Life does not
give
do-overs. Not like this.
Mr Barak said recently that if you told him 35 years ago that in 35
years there would still be war, essentially unchanged, he would have
thought you mad. Now, if you tell him there will be this same war 100
years from now - who would dare to call you mad, or even a pessimist.
What Mr Arafat must do is make a speech in Arabic and English to
prepare
his people for peace:
"The Israelis are not our friends but they are our neighbors, and we
must live in peace with them. Our disputes do not justify killing
children, ours or theirs, and we must join the family of nations for
peaceful border resolutions. We must prepare for peace and neighborly
relations.
The Israelis are not our enemies and we are not theirs. Most of the
lands we have sought, 95% or more, have been returned. The 5% does not
justify the dead Jews and Arabs that we have.
And as Mr Reagan said to Mr Gorbachev "tear down the [Berlin] wall", so
I will now close down the Museum of the Martyrs of Pizza Bombing. There
is a time for martyrdom, and there is a time for peace. The time for
martyrdom has gone, the time for peace has come."
But, as long as the Palestinians seek the right of return for 275
million Palestinians, into both Palestine and Israel, there will never
be a deal, so the war will go forever. Even as the Saudis suggest a
negotiation on this, the Palestinians tell all - "give away Riyadh, but
Israeli Palestine is not yours to give away"- so these Saudi
"normalized
relations" are nonsense. The discussion of reparations for evicted
Palestinians, those who fled, three generations later, must be paired
to
reparations for the Jews who fled Arab lands, also under persecutions.
Let the Jews assign their reparations to the Palestinians, and the
Arabs
can they pay off their own with their own money. Simple story.
About the same time, 1948, the British also left India, and divided
India into India, and East and West Pakistan, with great population
transfer and great loss of life. Pakistan then further divided into
Pakistan proper and Bengla Desh. These people have fought four? five
wars in fifty years, but they DO NOT fight over the right of return.
They have managed to move into the future, over precisely he same
issues
of religion, ethnicity, territory, nationalism and religious war (as we
see even as we speak, in the Muslim-Hindu wars today in the Indian
news). The Moslems there are not fighting over disputed acreage, they
ae fighting over God, and that is the fight,, nationalism and God, and
the issue of "disputed territories" and the right of return - are non
issues for the other Moslem population transfer in the nearby regions.
So the Palestinians have no credibility but have just invented a reason
for the gullible, including themselves, to hate israel in the name of
God and land.
I also find incomprehensible that Mr Arafat has achieve this
untouchable
status. He is only a man, and mortal, and like a Jew, does he not bleed
when cut? I should like to find out.
The finest comparison of the ineffectiveness of the IDF inability's now
- is the comparison to Vietnam, where the US military was being used to
"send a message" to the other side, that we would blow up a few more
empty buildings if you continued to murder children at bar -mitzvahs.
This is truly primitive and truly feeble.
It is just not credible that Israeli cannot defend itself. A recent Fox
news coverage of a latest bombing said, in some incredulity - that
there
is no boundary between the Palestinian areas from which the bomber
stroll into Jerusalem, and Jerusalem, where they commit murder. The
road
blocks stop cars, people on foot just walk across the fields. A nation
that will not defend itself deserves to die. The Jews are better at
disapora than at nationhood, and will return to what we are good at.
It is time for the Seam, for armed Israelis with itchy trigger fingers
to shoot suspicious Palestinians and some Jews, it is time for bomb
dogs
on every street, for paraffin / gun-residue tests on the hands of every
palestinian stopped on the street, bomb reside on their clothing
It is time for a shutdown of Palestinian autonomy. The terms of Oslo
were limited self-government in exchange for limited arms. The
expansion
to unlimited arms is the end of Oslo. Mr Arafat should be confined to
house arrest, with no television interviews and no cell phones and no
command contact, merely bread and water and Israeli interrogators. He
is
an old man and the isolation would break him. Let him go to Beirut, and
not be permitted back.
It is also important to remember that intifada I, when Arafat was
resurrected by that fool Peres, behind Rabin's back, thus creating a
fait accompli of Palestinian Peaceful Partnership, resurrecting Mr
Arafat from his wonderful banishment to Tunisia - that Intifada was
marked mostly by absolutist Arafatists killing the accommodationist
Arabs left behind in the west back (gaza is a different story), and the
killing of Israelis was just a cover story and a distraction.
More Arabs were killed by Arabs than were Arabs killed by Jews. So, to
go back to the Vietnam analogy, just as Vietnam finally fell to an
external armed invasion, the accommodationist Arabs were conquered by
an
armed invasion from Tunisia, aided and abetted by the "useful idiots"
of
the Israeli left, and the man who is the author of all this death, Mr
Peres, and his partnership foe peace.
