Praise for Netanyahu

This is my response to Zev Chafets' article denouncing Netanyahu as a
political opportunist after the no PLO state vote by the Likud commitee.
Your ad hominem attack of Netanyahu smacks of your own political prejudice and is unfair and unsubstantiated. It was Netanyahu's opposition to Sharon that finally pressured Sharon to abdicate his year-long policy of restraint against the Paestinian terrorists and, after 600 Israeli deaths, to take the offense in the March IDF operation. Besides, what's wrong with the Likud upholding its platform and agreeing not to reward the terrorists with a rogue state?
Thank G-d for Netanyahu. He has been a one man PR team for the state of Israel in a time when Israel was looking weak and losing its deterrence in the Arab world under Sharon and Peres. Till recently, with his policy of restraint to appease the int'l community and the State Dept, Sharon had sacrificed Jewish lives in the face of a bloodthirsty enemy and abandoned the Likud /Israeli mandate upon which he was elected. For Shame on Sharon.

Zev Chafets' response:
I think you may have missed the point of my article. I have no problem
with
Netanyahu's policy analysis. My problem is with his demonstrable lack
of
character (the examples I cited are a few among a very great many). He
was,
for that reason, a very destructive prime minister and would be again.
I agree that Netanyahu is an excellent spokesman and I would be glad to
see
him remain in that role, perhaps as Foreign Minister. But the prime
minister
of a country like Israel (ie. an endangered country) has to be someone
capable of preferring the national interest to his/her own.
my(Judith Weinstein) response:
A man of principle, often reflected in his policies, and yes with
"moral clarity", like Netanyahu, is a man of "character". Also, when he
left office, Netanyahu was also cleared of any wrongdoing (i.e. accepting
unreported gifts) in the unfound Labor dictated interrogations against
him.
As for upholding the national interest above his personal ambition,
Netanyahu's principle of no restraint in the face of a blood thirsty enemy
clearly puts the survival and value of the Israelis and all Jews above
the appeasement policy of a self interested Sharon who fears losing his
Prime Ministership if he does not compromise to preserve the unity
government with Arafat's best defender Shimon Peres. It is that very unity
government with the delusional creators of the suicidal Oslo agreem't
that have "endangered" Israel.
