A Propmise Is a Promise
Nathan Mayer (11.2.01)
I have followed Bibi's career since his famous Press conference on Arab TV during the Madrid conference in 1990. I have read his books in Hebrew and I have always considered him to be the best of Israeli Statesman. The reason I am writing you this letter is because I want to convince him to accept the position of Foreign Minister in order to 1).Maintain his Political following in the Likud - something Sharon's men are trying to eliminate altogether. 2). He would help restore Israel's image and thus contribute to its standing in this difficult period. I sent him a letter in Hebrew to this effect via FAX - attached to this E-Mail for your attention.
I can understand his not running in the recent election as Prime Minister, without the dissolution of the Knesset as rightly he felt that the present setup of the political parties was virtually impossible to sustain without a serious compromise of his political agenda. But as a Foreign Minister -- NOT being a member of parliament nor sharing any responsibility for the survival of the coalition he has the best of both worlds. He does not vote in the Knesset, so he doesn't get involved in the daily bickering of the political factions and at the same time he can mentain his political clout in the party. If he stays out of politics he is liable to lose his influence in the Likud and thus would find it almost impossible to make a comeback.
Mr. Sharon promissed that if elected he would offer Bibi this Ministry - and up to now with the excuse that Bibi is not interested he ignored him completely and did not have the decency to offer him the job. However, if Bibi sent signals NOW to his MK supporters that he IS interested in the Foreign Ministry - Sharon would have to offer him the job. I would appreciate it if you and EVERYONE else who is close to Bibi can convince him on this point, as he is about to make the mistake of his career. Mr. Sharon will form a Government with the Labour Party and perhaps last throught the entire term. Even Movie Superstars, once they disappear for too long they vanish into oblivion. Bibi should realise that and DO something about it.
On my part, I am going to write to the JP a letter headed: A Propmise Is a Promise.
