To: The Editor of the Wall Street Journal Re: Hamas Knows One Big Thing, by Bret Stephens, Opinion Page, December 30th, 2008 Even when its realization appeared a remote chance, Winston Churchill defined embattled Britain’s war aim essentially in one word, “Victory.” In his very fine article Bret Stephens is very right to point out that this was not the way that Israel’s outgoing Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, conducted the 2006 conflict with Hezbollah. It is also true that Israel can no longer prevail adhering to its standards of restraint when its sworn enemies would stoop to any level of war crime such as sending an eleven year old boy with a backpack full of explosives to be detonated by remote control at a checkpoint. To achieve Victory over the Nazi regime the U.S. and Britain bombed major German cities regardless of the substantial loss of civilian life. And when Japan kept on fighting Victory was achieved thanks to the “political will” to use the lethal atomic power with full knowledge of the unavoidable huge number of civilian casualties. The political will on the part of President Bush and his decision to support the surge despite many antagonists in Congress and the loud usual suspects such as the New York Times, The Washington Post, and NPR was instrumental in the dramatic turn of events, drawing victory from the jaws of an almost certain defeat. For the sake of Israel, I hope that its leaders would study the events of Iraq, free themselves from “ingenious conceit,” learn the lessons of the 2006 conflict with Hezbollah and are capable of marshalling political will as President Bush did in Iraq. If Israel decides to fight this time for victory the chances of lasting peace with the Palestinian Arabs will be enhanced. Robert Zeidman, MD Weston Mass |
