Straw dogs

David Vance January 8, 2003

The latest barbaric bombing in Tel Aviv carried out by Palestinian terrorists has been greeted with ritualistic hand-wringing from certain quarters and none more so than the British Government. It is reported that British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw clashed with Israeli Foreign Secretary Binyamin Netanyahu over the decision to ban a Palestinian delegation from attending "peace talks in London."

It is understood that the two men accused each other of failing to seek proper partners for peace. Transcripts of the conversation between the two men reveal that Mr. Netanyahu told Mr. Straw that the sui! cide bombings made "business as usual" impossible.

He then urged the foreign secretary to adopt the same position as U.S. President George Bush "that leaders compromised by terror cannot be partners for peace." Mr. Netanyahu added that "You in Britain are doing the exact opposite."

Mr. Straw replied, "No, it is Israel that is doing the opposite. Instead of concentrating on dealing with terrorism, it is striking at Palestinian delegates. I very much hope that the Israeli government will think again."

Mr. Straw concluded by informing Mr. Netanyahu that the latest bombing, terrible as it was, only went to emphasize the need for people to get around the negotiating table.

Yet how is it that with dozens of Israeli citizens having just been brutally slaughtered by maniacal Palestinians the best that the UK can do is patronize Israel for "striking" at Palestinian delegates by banning them from traveling to London?

The answer is that the now j! eopardized London Middle East peace talks are the brain wave of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and the deaths of Israelis are nothing but an irritating inconvenience to the Blair agenda.

It is obvious that the UK and Israel have diametrically opposed responses in how to deal with terrorist insurgency. Which approach works best?

The stance of the UK government requires careful scrutiny. It lays proud claim to having finally "solved" the terrorist problem in Northern Ireland. International plaudits have been bestowed upon Mr. Blair for his momentous achievements in dealing with IRA terrorism and the fact that his Foreign Secretary Mr. Straw has been chastised by Mr. Netanyahu causes stupefaction in Downing Street. Doesn't Israel understand that Britain has cracked terrorism?

How has this great wonder been wrought? Mr. Straw would explain that entering into "dialogue" with the representatives of the terrorist groups is the first step; embracing the concept! of talks at any price is essential; and above all, finding the courage to take "risks for peace" is crucial to a successful outcome.

What exactly are "risks for peace?" Well, in the case of the UK government they include releasing mass murderers from prison, permitting propagandists for terrorism to be seated at the heart of government, corrupting democracy by offering terrorists the chance to control policing, providing public funding for paramilitary-controlled groups and turning a blind eye to every form of illegality carried out by terrorists.

The greatest "risk for peace" has been to grant terrorists the fulfillment of their political objectives in exchange for a limited ceasefire. Selling out the liberty of a million people in order to obtain this tawdry settlement is one of the British Governments finest achievements. How dare Mr. Netanyahu question the credentials of such a progressive UK administration?

Reduced to its essentials the Blair ma! ster plan for solving terrorism is nothing short of appeasement, echoing that showed by a previous British government towards Hitler in the 1930s.

Britain wants to assist in imposing a similar formula upon Israel. Enter all-inclusive talks with Arafat. Be prepared to show generosity of spirit and accept that Palestinians have a valid argument. Give them more land for an imperfect peace. Tolerate Hamas, Islamic Jihad, al-Aqsa Martyrs! Maybe being driven into the sea is a price worth paying for peace?

Britain cannot understand Israeli resolution to fight for liberty. The concept of seeking to defeat terrorists militarily is incomprehensible to the straw dogs at the British Foreign Office. Israel can learn much from such a craven regime and in that respect Benjamin Netanyahu is quite right to point out that no respectable government can ever tolerate terrorists as partners in peace. That is something that the preening Mr. Blair can no longer say.
