Netanyahu: Attacks a 'Wake-Up Call From Hell'

By John Whitesides

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Calling the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon (news - web sites) ``a wake-up call from hell,'' former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (news - web sites) said on Thursday the United States and allies must be relentless in fighting back.

``The time for action is now,'' Netanyahu told the U.S. Congress, saying the networks of support for those responsible must be wiped out before they gain weapons of mass destruction and fundamentally change the course of human affairs.

``Today the terrorists have the will to destroy us, but they do not have the power,'' he told a House of Representatives panel just hours before President Bush (news - web sites) planned to address a joint session of Congress on the attacks and the U.S. response.

``There is no doubt that we have the power to crush them. Now we must also show that we have the will,'' Netanyahu said.

``We have received a wake-up call from hell.''

Netanyahu said the United States must ensure the most punishing diplomatic, economic and military actions are taken against any state found to be harboring or supporting groups that have carried out such attacks.

He said the ultimate goal of Islamic militants, emboldened by their victory in Afghanistan (news - web sites) over the former Soviet Union, was the destruction of the United States. Any signs of weakness in retaliating for the hijack attacks that left more than 6,500 people dead or missing will be seen as encouragement for more strikes, he said.

``Unless they are stopped now, their attacks will continue, and become even more lethal in the future,'' Netanyahu said.

Some states that support such groups already have access to biological and chemical weapon capabilities, he said, and could one day soon gain access to rudimentary nuclear bombs.

But once such groups learn that the United States will not withdraw in fear but instead will strike back hard, he said, ''then you will see this danger recede.''

Members of Congress asked to hear from Netanyahu, hoping to gain some perspective from Israel's lengthy battle with suicide bombers and militant attacks.

Lawmakers said the United States had much to learn from Israel's experience, but warned the coming campaign against those responsible for the attacks will be unlike anything tried before and will require the support of allies in Europe and elsewhere.

``We are embarking on a long, costly, difficult, painful struggle like no other our nation has undertaken,'' said California Rep. Tom Lantos (news - bio - voting record), a Democrat and the only Holocaust survivor in Congress.
