UNITED NATIONS AND PEACE
JOSEPH S. HERSH 24 Aug 2002
Sir, - In Shlomo Avineri's "The moral blindness of Terje Roed-Larsen" (August 23), he writes: " ...and I am ready for dismantling settlements as part of a real peace package."
In my humble opinion, there will never be a "real peace package." At best, there will be a protracted cease fire until such time that the Arabs feel they are in a position to eliminate the State of Israel. I have quoted the following from the Koran numerous times - possibly Mr. Avineri should read it and consider its meaning: refer to The Koran by N.J. Dawood, Penguin Classics, the surah The Cow, 2:191 - "Slay them wherever you find them. Drive them out of the places from which they drove you." The Arabs say we drove them out of what is today the State of Israel.
"Statements like these, coming from an official UN representative, only explain why the UN has until now failed to achieve anything meaningful in the Middle East - and will continue to fail if people like Roed-Larsen continue to be its spokesmen in the region."
The quote is correct, but the UN representative is carrying out the wishes of the UN which is overloaded with Muslim nations that want to see the destruction of Israel. In a democracy, the function of a representative is to carry out the mandate of his constituents. Unfortunately Roed-Larsen's constituents are anti-Israel.
What did Mr. Avineri expect of Mr. Roed-Larsen?
