Dear Sirs
On today's site of the Israel Consulate in Chicago I
listened to the above interview by uri Avineri. There
is a limit to democracy and free speech. There must
be some law in Israel not to jeopardize Israeli
security even with words and not to foment hatred. He
must be held accountable. Many in Israel are
disgusted with what the "leftists" are doing now and
say that they are destroying Israel, starting with
those "on the top". This matter is so serious that I
took the liberty of copying the Israel National News
radio station (aroutz 7).
In the interview, Mr. Avineri says that this present
government will not withdraw to the pre-1967 borders
because it is Mr. Sharon himself who created the
settlements and he would lose face if he agrees to the
Saudi "proposal". His words seem to communicate that
if Mr.Sharon is taken out of the way, the road is open
to peace with the palestinians, which you and I know
cannot happen since they are terrorists and why should
we ever give them our secure borders? Isn't it enough
that Rabin and Peres put Israel in such a state?
totally insecure?
Well, the insult is this: When asked if Mr. Netanyahu
would offer a better chance for peace by accepting the
Saudi proposal if he were in power, Mr. Avineri
laughed and said "Do you know the difference between
cholera and bubonic plague?"
I think this has to be punished. If you want to
publish my protest you can do so under the name John
Orr although what is more important is to take Mr.
Avineri to court for such statements. If there is no
law in Israel to ban insults, fomenting uprising and
hatred, then one should quickly be enacted.
Thank you.
