U.S. MIDDLE EAST POLICY IS A MIRAGE
Preston Stanley 23 April 2002
I agree completely with Charles Krauthammer's article about U.S. action against Saddam Hussein. I want to share my thoughts concerning America's Middle East policy.
For thirty years the U.S. has pursued a schizophrenic policy of support fot Israel, on the one hand and on the other hand, appeasement of the Arab dictatorships. Holy Scripture tells us that " A house divided against itself cannot stand ". It can be said that a foreign policy divided against itself cannot succeed.
America's vacillating, counterproductive policy has only emboldened the Arab dictatorships to ever greater violence and aggression.
The Arab countries have become openly contemptuous of the U.S. ; Secretary Powell was treated rudely and publicly scolded by Arab leaders during his recent trip to the Middle East, in an attempt to solicit support for peace negotiations. The Arab countries hold fund raisers for terroists and stage Anti-American street demonstrations.
America's Middle East policy is a mirage of self-delusion that somehow we can mollify the Arabs and persuade them, through diplomacy, to disavow terroism and stop preaching hatred for Christians and Jews.
America must adopt a new, more realistic Middle East policy : A policy that acknowledges that there are no " moderate, friendly " Arab countries and that the Arab dictatorships are hostile to America's interests.
We must recognize that the Palestinian Authority is a terroist organization and that the Arabs do not want a peaceful resolution to the Israeli - Palestinian conflict. We must realize that their words are written in sand and that they cannot be trusted to keep their promises. The Arab s will invent an excuse to violate any negotiated treaty.
America should adopt a Middle East policy similar to the policy that we pursued during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. We should forge alliances and surround, contain and isolate the Arab dictatorships.
We should demand that the Arabs cease financing and encouraging terroism and we must make it clear that we do not rule out the use of any weapon in our arsenal if their terroist activities continue.
We should immediately proceed with plans to take out Saddam Hussein and then focus our attention on Iran and Syria.
Sincerely,
Preston Stanley, Lynchburg, Va.
