War…A Gift From Islam

On Labor day 2001, I would have never anticipated that we would be at war by September 11th. However, since this is the case, we all have new duties and mine is to try and shed some light where there is presently little. People are fearful and confused. Questions like why would they do this and do Islamic people worship the same God that Judeo-Christian people worship, are popping up all over the place. Furthermore, many people have questions about the teachings of Islam relative to why a religion that some are calling peaceful, produces so many people that really seem to hate Americans.

Others will write a great deal about the tragic events of September the 11th. The terrible crimes and the tragedy inflicted upon this nation will outlive Pearl Harbor. My concern in this writing is to try and answer these questions from an American Christian perspective.

To start with this is a just war. The United States has every right legally, religiously, and morally to retaliate. The free world must not convey that we are willing to accept terrorism on this grand scale. Our enemies, who have taken advantage of the most fundamental Islamic teachings in order to justify their criminal acts, must be dealt with swiftly and severely.

Make no mistake about it, various Muslim groups have declared a Jihad or holy war on the United States. They would have us believe that this is because the United States has stood by Israel. This may be their claim, but it is not the case. The real fact of the matter is that they want us to live in constant fear of their cowardly and cruel actions in order to cause us to doubt our beliefs in God and in freedom. It is also suspected and nearly proven that the attacks were financially beneficial to the terrorists. Recent estimates are that these beasts netted around $100,000,000. This makes it clear that these terrorists are seeking power and wealth through unholy means, not holiness through powerful means.

Another disturbing aspect of these attacks is that there are American people who want us to reconsider our long-standing relationship with the nation of Israel. Of course this is one of the things that the terrorists are hoping for. They have realized that they can’t break Jewish will power, so now they are aiming to divide Israel’s closest earthly friend. Their hatred for Jews is so great that they would attack God if they could. But they can’t, so we’re next in line. From a secular point of view, reconsidering our support of Israel should seem like a ludicrous notion. This prospect should never even be open for discussion until long after the perpetrators of such severe crimes against us are out of business. In fact any discussion of the subject should be likened to aiding the enemy. What type of nation would we be to turn our backs on a friend in peril. Especially if you consider the fact that the Hebrew people are the only people who have continually occupied that area for over 3 thousand years. In 1917 the League of Nations officially established present day Israel as the Jewish homeland. In 1967 Israel expanded its borders after defeating the Egyptian forces that attacked them. This displaced the people referred to today as Palestinian people. Since this time Palestinians have been trying to establish their homeland and overthrow Israel rule. Terrorism and media manipulation have been two of their primary tools. Israel has lived with terrorism sponsored by various Muslim groups and states for a very long while. We are similar cultures facing a similar foe. We must stick together.

From a religious point of view, I happen to believe that two of primary reasons that the United States is still free and prosperous is because we send forth missionaries to other areas of the world in great numbers and because we have been friends of the Jewish people. I believe that they are God’s chosen people. I believe that they have been a great blessing to this nation and any other nation where they are able to live freely. I also believe that any nation that turns their back on the Jewish people is in for some rough times. There are scriptural allusions to this and there are practical allusions to this phenomenon. Germany and Great Britain are two nations that suffered tremendously when they betrayed their Jewish commitments. Hence, on the eve of a fight with sectors of the Muslim world, I believe that it would be very foolhardy to pull away any support for the nation of Israel. At this time, anything less than a strong commitment to Israel would bolster the resolve of the hate mongers that Jet bombed the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Western Pennsylvania.

Notice that in the preceding paragraph, I didn’t say that a reason for our great blessings is that we have been such a great and holy nation. In many ways we have been a great and magnanimous nation. But, some of that is ancient history. I believe that as we send our troops off to war, all Americans ought to look back on, confess and seek forgiveness for our many sins. For as in all great struggles, the hand of God is present. I don’t want to divide our people, but I must say what is in my heart. I believe that we need to be sincere to God if we want his hand of providence to be with our people and our forces in this new struggle against worldwide terror. It will not be just a war of distant technology. It will be personal and up close. Man against man, stealth against stealth, brawn against brawn, and soul against soul. Recently in a phone conversation while discussing this issue, I was asked what the major American differences are between World War II and now? Since this was the last time we vanquished our adversaries. Quickly I said “loose divorce laws and 35 million abortions.” I could have said Gay marriages, governmental tax policies to censor churches, relativism teaching all truths as equal, selectively banning God from sectors of society, apathy, pornography, drug abuse, a lack of belief that good conquers evil, spin in media, or a host of other things. And if I went on long enough, I assure you that we all have things that we should confess as we ask God to be with us in this struggle. We our presently United in our anger at our foes, but we are still divided on major issues of morality and politically. This may cause great harm when casualties start to mount.

I have already heard that the hijackings and subsequent bombings were planned by our military industrial complex. I have heard that we deserve what we got in New York and Washington because we are a terrorist nation. I have heard people say that its Bush’s fault because he is in tight with the oil companies and this is just another reason for prices to go up. I have heard Jerry Falwell compared to Osama Bin Ladin. I have heard a newscaster refer to a national day of prayer and remembrance as a day of remembrance. I have heard people say that religion is the cause of all wars. I have heard those groups that preach that we should be tolerant of these acts and not compound the evil. I have heard of people being chastised for public displays of patriotism. I have heard of a teacher that burned a flag in front of 6th graders as he shouted Babylon is burning. And I have heard people ask where was God on September the 11th. I even heard one comment that it looks like God was on their side that day. So please, I ask anyone that might read this, for the sake of our troops and for the sake of this mostly good and mostly well-intended nation. Please lay up your sins and pray for unity for this nation as we seek to vanquish international terror. Ask the Lord to open the eyes of these double-minded people who have believed any trash because they have refused to believe in him. It is not the time to celebrate our differences, as some recent fools would have us do. It is time to get down on our knees and pray for the Lord to purge us of our worst qualities and build us up around his best virtues of love, justice and freedom. These are our legendary attributes that some Muslims hate and find dubious. It is time to show the World the real America that the vast majority of us know and love.

So, where was God when we were attacked? Was he really on the other side? The answers are “here” and “no”, sequentially. Very few people, with any sense, who watched that plane slam the south tower could think that it was from God. I hope that, that image is indelibly etched in every ones mind that saw it with an inscription that reads “a gift from Islam.” The God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David and Jesus was watching that day and he was probably crying because the false idol Allah had claimed more victims. Ever since the fall of man he has watched and suffered with our situation. This is why he sent our savior. Because of evil the first hundred years can be pretty rough. Because of God, eternity can be much, much better. He was where he always is lovingly letting people exercise their free will. Knowing that sometimes there will be joy and other times there will be sadness. Always knowing and hoping that more and more of us will see his love beyond the pain. Although it may seem to soon to celebrate, it is worth noting that the hijacked aircraft were booked at less than 50% capacity. And, 60% of the people employed at the World trade center were not in that terrible morning.

So much of this tragedy is so relevant to the teachings of God. Just consider the Lords Prayer. In this tragedy many people that hadn’t looked for God in a great while, suddenly were looking for the great and Holy God. We got a real and unfortunate taste of how much we appreciate God and life when are little corner of the world is much more like heaven. And we had a real sad wake up to the fact that in this world any day could be our last. All because of sin which we all need to have forgiven. Few in America presently doubt the reality of sin after watching that plane, Islam’s gift to us. For us, there is going to be a great challenge in forgiving as we want to be forgiven. This is where the separation between the church and state is going to be very handy. The state has an obligation to punish and protect us from the people and nations that did this to us. As people we will need to forgive eventually as we heal. We can already see that the suffering Muslim peasants are nothing more than serfs, subject to the same cruel and repressive people that attacked us. We have forgiven in our previous wars, and we will need to do it again. We will also need to pray for our enemy. In this war, it will be easier than in many others.

Because this is a jihad there are some rules working to our advantage that normally don’t apply. In the Muslim faith anyone that converts to another religion faces the death penalty. This means that by virtue of prayer and the workings of the Holy Spirit we could do a great deal to weaken our adversaries without even meeting them on the battlefield. The best part of this is that although you might not help to save their lives that have been placed in jeopardy, you may be helping them to save their soul. That is what I call a win, win situation. Serving the Lord and defeating a foe is a great opportunity. This is why September the 11th 2001 could be the day that Islam received its mortal wound.

Why would I want this? The answer is in what made these people do such a crazy thing to us? What form of hate or contempt causes people to plan and practice for months and years in order to end their lives in a ferocious destructive act to total strangers? Why do they hate us so? Sure enough they hate the freedom that is encompassing them more each day. But why?

The answer is Islam. It is their repressive religion. They tell us it is a peaceful religion, but it is OK to lie to us in a jihad. First of all it is not like Christianity in the respect that Jesus wants us to come to him freely and of our own accord. Nor is it like Judaism in the respect that a primarily benevolent God sometimes did seemingly cruel things in order that the widest array of people possible would come to understand his great nature and desire to love and serve him. Islam was started with the sword and conversion with the sword is an accepted and commendable practice. The choice is yours to make you can become a Muslim or you can die. It isn’t like here in the US where you are free to seek or not seek the truth. Over in many Islamic nations if you convert to another religion you face the death penalty. It seems to me to be a religion where entrapment is OK. Just like something I would expect from Satan or people that would turn civilian airliners into missiles. This is why the Taliban does not even acknowledge women. This is why so many are left living uneducated and in despair. With freedom comes knowledge. With knowledge, the fraud of Muhammad and his false God will be exposed.

I am not saying that I want Muslims dead. I want them to realize the fraud of their faith. It is the reason that there is so much wealth and so little progress. The late Ayatollah Khomeini said “The purest joy in Islam is to kill or be killed for Allah.(1) Muhammad, the eighth century merchant from Mecca who slaughtered many thousands of people while establishing Islam, said of Muslims “who relinquishes his faith kill him”(2) He also said “ I have been ordered by Allah to fight with people until they testify that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad his messenger.(3)

This is why so many Muslim nations hate the freedom we enjoy. They are happy to have their people live and die without any freedom as long as those people in power remain in power by keeping the masses ignorant. A true God would never be fearful of giving people the chance to see his merits.

People like to talk about the crusades of the middle-ages in Europe like the Christians there were really a little nutso back then. But, few people ever look back far enough to see that this was Christianity’s response to several hundred years of Jihad. Islam was the only religion that could have caused such mayhem and it is the only one that could have motivated these jet-bombers to do what they did on September 11th. Why? Because Islam teaches that the only sure way to paradise is to sacrifice ones life in Jihad.(4) As I have read, there appears to be over 100 verses in the Qur’an advocating the use of violence to spread Islam. This is why you see little kids on TV shouting “death to America” and “Allah is great” They refer to us as the great serpent and since it is their job to do away with infidels. We are on their hit list.

This is really unfortunate for us and the Muslim people here and abroad. We have to pity and pray for them. Because the vast majority of them are people that have never been allowed to think anything else. And it is true that most Islamic and Arab people are peace-loving people. So no matter how peculiar it seems. These people really need to have us praying for them. Many Islamic people are themselves caught in the big horrible trap called Islam. Unfortunately, it is tough to tell the difference between the safe and unsafe Muslims. So in the spirit of self-defense we must remain as fair as possible and yet ever vigilant until this crisis is over and Islam vanishes like so many other fraudulent faiths of the past.

In light of all of these facts, how should our military be responding to those that delivered the gift from Islam. In light of the facts that President Bush inherited a military that is ½ of its Gulf War size, along with dysfunctional and demoralized intelligence gathering agencies, he is doing a great job. It is difficult not to respect his tact. He has returned kindness for evil, in that he is giving the nations that harbor terrorists every opportunity to renounce them and turn them over. In the process he is making many friends that also hate the scourge of terrorism. Such alliances will bode well for us in this struggle. Bush has not only returned kindness for evil. He has returned law and order where there was none. He has returned restraint where there was none. And, I am certain that he will bring justice out of this great injustice. Not only will he do this, he will also provide security where there was none. I believe that when this struggle ends there will be no terrorists or radical governments in charge of weapons of mass destruction.

From what I have seen so far, President Bush is the man for these current challenges. Many people would have just as soon dropped nukes in order to make the pain of terrorism so severe that nobody would ever try it again. Others weren’t thinking nuclear, but they wouldn’t have had any problems leveling Kabul, Bagdad, and the West Bank. And with the enormity and history of the terrorism situation these things would not be entirely out of line. Terrorist and their sponsors must be put out of business. One of the first voices of reason out there was Chuck Colson of Prison Fellowship Ministries. Shortly after the attacks he warned that we should be careful not to attack broad areas and carelessly kill innocent women and children.

I wrote him and asked why that was our concern? After all it is the terrorists choice to hide among and endanger their people. And to be quite honest, when we do get close to these cowards, I think that they will make sure that large amounts of innocents go down with them. It is the Islamic way. Our President has been wise and resourceful. He is preparing us for a long struggle with an expansive and slippery foe. We owe him and our troops all of the support we can give them. “God Bless America.” Not because we deserve it, but because he loves us and we need him.
