THE WOEFUL WITLESSNESS OF A WALL
Mike Leibowitz 5 July 2002
Israel now hopes a wall will solve its terrorist problem. It won't
work!
Firstly, anything that enjoys the enthusiastic support of Ben Eliezer,
the
unlikely defense minster, has to end in disaster! Secondly, The history
of
border walls as defensive devices shows that they have always been a
severe
squandering of resources to provide solace to wishful thinking! Let us
look
at this history:
THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA
It was begun about 200 B.C.E. and reached its peak in the Ming dynasty
about eighteen centuries later. Four thousand miles long, it makes the
pyramids microscopic in comparison. Its width varies from 17 to 33
feet;
and its height, from 25 to 45 feet. The North side extended over in a
ledge
through which "death holes" were cut in the floor. These allowed the
defenders to hit attackers with arrows, spears, and boiling oil,
without
exposing themselves, so as to make an enemy scaling virtually
impossible.
However in 1215, Genghis Kahn breached the wall very easily, using the
irresistable weapon of bribery. In fact, the wall would succomb to
bribery
on three major occassions when it was breached by Huns, Mongols and
Manchus.
China's Great wall epitomizes all defensive border walls in that 1) it
failed; and, 2) the resources needed to breach it were microscopic in
comparison to the resources needed to build it!
HADRIAN'S WALL
The emperor Hadrian, to protect Roman settlements in Northern Britain
from
the raiding Scots and Picts, built a wall from sea to sea in Scotland.
It
was 20 feet high and 8 feet wide, and connected Roman forts along the
route.
From the getgo it was a failure. How it was breached was never learned.
The
excuse was that the raiders just flanked it by using boats. Hadrian's
successor Antoninus built a second wall the Antonine Wall from sea to
sea 35
miles North of Hadrian's Wall. This additional obstacle did not
diminish the
raiding. The Romans made no more attempts at wall enhancement, as they
continued to endure the raids until quitting England around 400 C.E.
MAGINOT LINE
Sensing Germany might assault them again, the French sought security
behind
an impregnable wall. Starting in 1929 and through the great depression,
the
French spent 29 Billion 1930s dollars building the Maginot Line, a 200
mile
obstacle across the route the Germans had to take to enter France(if
they
didn't take Belgium first). It was a series of concrete tunnels going
down 6
stories, topped by heavily armored gun turrets. Fighting on that Line
would
protect them from the horrors of trench warfare they recalled so well
from
the World War, and the Line was believed impregnable. Its consumption
of
resources left the rest of the French defense establishment the leaner.
So
what! It was impregnable, right!
The Germans, however, did not cooperate with French hopes, and
flanked
the Maginot Line through Belgium, to attack it from the rear. It
promptly
fell. Its tactical loss was minor compared to what the suprise did to
the
French psyche with its "Maginot Line mentality." The non-plussed French
were
incapacitated. Paris fell in a few weeks, and France promptly
surrendered.
SIEGFRIED LINE
The Siegfried Line was Germany's answer to the Maginot Line, and
despite
all their Germanic thoroughness, it would fare no better! In February
of
1945, the advancing Allied armies would flank it too, hit it from the
rear
and make short work of it. It was such a minor episode that it barely
made
it into some history books.
U.S.-MEXICAN BORDER FENCE
To stem the flow of illegal Mexican migrants, especially at San Diego,
California and Nogales, Arizona, the US built a fence and enlarged its
Border Patrol. The fence is 14 - 15 feet high, topped with layers of
barbed
wire, and equipped with electronic sensors signaling patrol
helicopters. The
fence is patrolled by 8,500 border police plus the National Guard,
using
infra red detectors at night, and every other available technical aid.
One
Billion dollars/year is spent maintaining that border.
170,000 illegal immigrants/year get through, along with 15 tons of
heroin
and 400 tons of cocaine. Estimates are that the fence reduces illegal
immigration by 1.2 percent. The Mexican's motivation is $60/day vs.
$5/day,
versus the terrorists dreams of paradise.
The history of walls and fences as defensive borders has consistently
shown
them to be horrible investments to be defeated by a small fraction of
their
cost. This should be predictable to anyone realizing that you are
pitting a
passive device against active assailants; like pitting a tree against
woodsmen with axes.
We know that the Jews are the world's champs in denial, defense
mechanisms,
and wishful delusional thinking. It requires the application of all of
those
Jewish extremes to think terrorists can be contained with a fence as
tho
they were chickens! They might bribe their way though. (That there are
Israelis who can be bought has been shown by the Knesset's passage of
Oslo,
and the terrorists having Israeli uniforms and guns). Some nice leftist
might even let them through for free (The calamities experienced in
Lebanon
could not have occurred without treachery from within.) Even as you
read
this, Arabs are planning on raming the wall with a car of explosives,
then
an 100 killers will burst through to fan out in small groups to wreak
havoc!
If the wall should prove too much of an inconvenience to the
terrorists
they can always use Israeli Arabs. Israeli Arabs have not only an
advantage
in position, but an advantage from the wishful thinking of Israelis
that
their native Arabs are different. Should the wall force the terrorists
to
use Israeli Arabs (which I doubt it will) at least it will force the
Israelis to give up on their delusional wishful thinking about Israeli
Arabs.
All that Israel will get from that wall is a Maginot Line mentality-
temporary mood elevation from false security to be payed for by
amplified
malaise when it fails! The fewer Israelis who expect anything from that
wall
the better!
Sincerely,
Mike Leibowitz
