Yoav Peled `Was Barak telling the Truth?' in the Guardian

Mr. Pelev apparently still labors under the delusion that Mr. Arafat and the Palestinian Authority's ultimate goal is peace with Israel. His intimation that
ex-Israeli Prime Minister Barak deliberately sabotaged the peace process is an invention on the level of the current Arab fiction that `the Jews' blew up the World Trade Center on September 11th.
A dose of reality: Barak was desperate to come to an accord with Arafat in an effort to stop Arab terrorism and save his and the Labor Party's flagging political fortunes. Both ex-President Clinton and his envoy, Dennis Ross have gone on record revealing that Arafat was offered unprecedented concessions which would have given the Arabs Gaza, 95% of the West Bank and sovereignty over East Jerusalem. Arafat refused, with consequences for both Israeli and Arab that have still to be fully realized.
As for Barak's remarks about the Palestinian culture and it's attitude toward lying and keeping agreements, these are factual statements, albeit generalities. While it is certainly not true for an entire people, anyone with a knowledge of Islam and the Q'uran knows that there is no ethical stigma associated with a Muslim lying or breaking agreements with a non-Muslim, a kaffir, especially if it is done to advance Islam. The Prophet Muhammad did this on many occasions, and the Q'uran and Hadith are rife with examples and rationalizations of this conduct. One need only examine Arafat's flagrant violations of the Oslo Accords and his many lies and prevarications for a modern example.
Sincerely,
